University of Sheffield Lacrosse
University of Sheffield Lacrosse Club is one of Yorkshire’s oldest lacrosse teams, established in 1961. They begin every season with several free ‘Give It a Go’ sessions and team trials, to ensure prospective members of all abilities are able to join the club. Whether students have never played before or are seasoned lacrosse professionals, the club work hard to involve everybody at a skill level most suitable for them.
Sheffield enter two Women's and two Men's teams into the BUCS league and travel across the country to represent the club, competing against other universities. Both first teams compete in the Northern 1st Division and both second teams compete in the Northern 2nd Division.
Season runs until March and accumulates in Sheffield Varsity, which showcases and celebrates student sport in Sheffield. The club’s first team compete against Sheffield Hallam University, to earn valuable varsity points which contribute to an overall score from across the spectrum of university sports. It always proves an extremely exciting occasion, with over 1000 students in attendance at games.
As a result of the hard work of the club's committee, high commitment levels from members, and outstanding achievements, the club was awarded Club of the Year 2021/22 and the Volunteering and Community Outreach Award. In 2022, the university was awarded #1 University for Clubs and Societies by Student Crowd.
The club also offer a fantastic social environment and host weekly mixed socials and attend the Student's Union sports night, ROAR, involving different social themes to promote club creativity and inclusivity. The teams also host sober socials throughout each term, for pie nights to trampoline parks, there is always something on a Wednesday!
The club also have a Women's third team and an inclusive development team, to welcome members of all abilities to participate and progress in the sport as much as they aspire to. The club’s development programme offer a fantastic opportunity for players to become more familiar with lacrosse, in a welcoming and inclusive beginners environment, with weekly training and tournaments throughout the year. This provides an abundance of opportunities to develop important skills and make friends.
The club is also on the brink of a huge boost in facilities, with brand new sports pitches and a wall ball practice area!
